Ischgl Is World Famous – But Also Loud and Expensive
Anyone who's been to Ischgl knows: the ski area is fantastic, the infrastructure top-notch, the parties legendary. But also: hotels are expensive, the village street in winter is a human flood, and quiet evenings are hard to find.
This is no secret. Which is exactly why many families and quieter holidaymakers look for alternatives in the region.
Kappl: 10 Minutes from Ischgl, a Different World
Kappl is in the same valley as Ischgl, just a few kilometres further up. The village has around 1,000 residents, its own small ski area, and a gondola that connects directly to the Ischgl ski area.
What this means: you can stay in Kappl – significantly cheaper than in Ischgl – and still use all 238 kilometres of piste every day.
What Makes Kappl Special
Peace and Quiet
No mass tourism, no overflowing village streets. Kappl is a genuine Tyrolean village with a church, butcher's, bakery – and a village square where people still know each other by name.
Family Friendliness
The Kappl ski area itself is perfect for families and beginners: well-arranged, not too steep, with a ski school and children's practice area. Ischgl, by contrast, is geared more towards advanced and fast skiers.
Prices
Hotels, holiday apartments, restaurants – in Kappl, almost everything is cheaper than in Ischgl. Families and groups travelling together can save noticeably here.
Authenticity
Kappl is not a fully commercialised ski resort. The locals know the guests, the atmosphere is warmer.
Skiing in Kappl – Is the Ski Area Worth It?
The Kappl ski area has around 40 kilometres of runs, making it significantly smaller than Ischgl. But: it's more than enough for 1-2 days, and the connecting lift to Ischgl opens up the full Paznaun ski area.
Recommendation: Enjoy the compact Kappl ski area for a day, use the big Ischgl ski area for the rest of the week – and eat and sleep relaxed in Kappl in the evenings.
Eating in Kappl
The restaurant scene in Kappl is smaller than in Ischgl – but often cosier and more authentic. Luis Diner is one of the most well-known restaurants in the village: a blend of Italian cuisine and American diner vibes, with stone-baked pizza, burgers, pasta and steak.
If you want to eat well after a long day on the slopes without queuing or paying inflated après-ski prices, this is the right place. Especially convenient for families: the kids' area with ball pit.
Bottom line: Kappl isn't for everyone – if you're after parties and bustle, stay in Ischgl. But if you're planning a quieter, more affordable and family-friendly ski holiday, Kappl deserves serious consideration. It's one of the best-kept secrets in the Paznaun Valley.
